El Grande returns in a completely overhauled edition, nearly 30 years after the original. The game is set in 15th century Spain, at the end of the Reconquista. Players send out their caballeros to win control of the 9 regions and become "El Grande".

Everything depends on where the king is located, and majorities can shift in the blink of an eye. Turn order depends on the power card each player plays. Each turn, players choose 1 of 5 action cards, which lets them place caballeros on the map and perform a special action. After every 3 rounds, players score points for their majorities in the different regions, with extra points for the majority in the current kingdom and in their home region. After 9 rounds in total, one player is crowned the new ruler of medieval Spain.
